Windows Maintenance Checklist

Regularly performing key maintenance tasks is the best way to keep your Windows server secure and running smoothly. We recommend following this checklist monthly.

Step 1: Apply System Updates

Keeping your system up-to-date is the most critical step for security. We recommend configuring Windows Update to download patches while allowing you to choose the installation time to avoid unexpected reboots.

It is best practice to perform updates during a planned maintenance window, as Windows updates almost always require a server reboot.

Step 2: Review Log Files (Event Viewer)

The Windows Event Viewer is the central hub for system and application logs. Regularly checking for "Errors" or "Critical Warnings" helps identify issues before they lead to downtime.

  • System Logs: Look for hardware issues or service failures.
  • Application Logs: Check for errors related to installed software.

Step 3: Check Disk Space Usage

A full C: drive can cause services to crash and prevent the system from booting. Monitor your available space regularly.

How to check: Open File Explorer, go to "This PC", and verify the free space on your system drive.

Step 4: Verify Your Backups

Never assume backups are running correctly. Regularly check that your backup jobs are completing without errors.

If you use Acronis Backup, log in to your dashboard or check the automated status reports sent to your email.

Step 5: Basic Security Audit

Accounts
Check lusrmgr.msc for unused or unknown users.
Failed Logins
Check Security logs for "Audit Failure" patterns.
Firewall
Verify active rules in Advanced Security Firewall.
