Disable a Service in Windows
If a Windows service prevents your server from booting or makes the system unstable, you can disable it manually in the Windows Registry from the Windows Rescue Mode. This is an advanced troubleshooting method for Windows Server on Server4You dedicated servers.
Warning: Editing the Windows Registry can cause severe system damage if done incorrectly. Proceed with caution and make sure you have a backup of your data before you begin.
Prerequisites
This entire process is performed within the Windows Rescue environment. You must first boot your server into this mode from the PowerPanel.

Step-by-Step Guide
Once you have connected to your server's rescue environment via VNC, open the Registry Editor by navigating to Start → Run and typing regedit.
The Registry Editor first shows the registry of the rescue system. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, choose File → Load Hive..., open C:\Windows\System32\config\SYSTEM of your server (the drive letter in the rescue system may differ) and enter RegTemp as the key name. Then navigate to the following key:
You will see a long list of subkeys, each corresponding to a service installed on your system.
Scroll through the list of services and click on the name of the service you wish to disable.
In the right-hand pane, find the value named Start. Double-click it to edit. You need to change the "Value data" to one of the following numbers to control how the service starts:
- 2: Automatic
- 3: Manual
- 4: Disabled
To completely disable the service, change the value to 4 and click OK.
Select RegTemp and choose File → Unload Hive... so the change is written to disk. Then close the Registry Editor and cancel the Rescue Mode from your PowerPanel. This will reboot your server back into its normal operating system with the service disabled.
