Reset Windows Administrator Password

This guide explains how to reset a lost or forgotten Administrator password on your Windows server using the rescue system's built-in NTPW Edit utility.

Prerequisite: Your server must be booted into the Windows Rescue System and connected via VNC — not RDP. The VNC session password must be exactly 8 characters long. → Starting rescue mode

Step 1: Open the NTPW Edit Utility

Find and launch the password reset tool on the rescue desktop.

Once connected to the rescue desktop via VNC, you will find a password reset utility named NTPW Edit on the Desktop. Launch it.

Step 2: Reset the Password

Select the Windows installation, choose the user account, and set a new password.

The utility will automatically detect your Windows installation. Select the user account you want to reset — e.g. Administrator — and enter a new password. Confirm and save the change within the utility.

Step 3: Reboot

Close the utility and cancel rescue mode via the PowerPanel.

After successfully resetting the password, close the NTPW Edit utility.

Do not reboot from within the rescue environment. Go to your PowerPanel and cancel rescue mode — this reboots the server back into Windows where you can log in with your new password. → Cancelling rescue mode
