Performing a Bare-Metal Restore

A bare-metal restore is a full server recovery process used in disaster scenarios, such as a complete hardware failure. This process restores your entire server—including the operating system, applications, and data—from a backup to new hardware.

Warning: This process will completely overwrite all data on your server's new drives. It is a last resort for disaster recovery.

1. Start the Bare-Metal Restore Environment

The entire process is managed through a special recovery environment that you launch from the PowerPanel.

  1. Navigate to Hardware -> Server Management and next to your server, choose Actions -> Start rescue mode.
  2. From the Recovery Type drop-down menu, select Acronis Bare-Metal Restore.
  3. Enter a secure password for the recovery session and click Next.

The restore environment will take about 10 minutes to start. Once it's ready, you will need to connect to your server's IP address on port 5900 using a VNC client.

2. Connect and Select Your Backup

After connecting with your VNC client, you will need to locate and open your backup archive.

  1. In the "Bootable Backup Agent" window, select Manage this machine locally.
  2. On the next screen, click Recover.
  3. You will be asked what to recover. Click Select data..., then click the Browse... button.
  4. In the location browser, select Cloud storage and click Log in.
  5. Enter your Acronis Backup credentials (not your PowerPanel login).
  6. Browse and select the specific backup archive you wish to restore from.

If your backup is encrypted, you will be prompted to enter your encryption password before you can proceed.

3. Configure and Initiate the Restore

This is the most critical step, where you map the backed-up data to your new physical disks.

Select What to Restore

You must restore not only your data but also the Master Boot Record (MBR) for the server to be bootable. At the bottom of the screen, select the checkboxes for MBRs and Basic drives.

For Software RAID: If you are restoring a software RAID, you must also select the Dynamic volumes (e.g., md0, md1).

Map Data to Disks

You must now assign the source data from the backup to the available destination disks. Go through each line that shows "Required" and map the backed-up partitions (e.g., sda1, sda2) to their corresponding new physical disks (e.g., Disk 1, Disk 2).

Once all mappings are complete and no "Required" labels are left, click OK at the bottom of the page to begin the restore process.

4. Finalize and Reboot

A progress bar will show the status of the data recovery. Once the restore has finished, the final step is to reboot the server into its newly restored operating system.

Crucial Final Step: Do not reboot from the Acronis VNC interface. You must go to your PowerPanel and cancel the rescue mode (Hardware -> Server Management -> Actions -> Abort Rescue). This will reboot the server from its hard drives.
