Monitoring S.M.A.R.T. on Windows
This guide shows how to check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drives in a Windows Server dedicated server with PowerShell and how to set up continuous monitoring with email alerts using CrystalDiskInfo.
Quick Test via PowerShell
This is the fastest way to get an initial assessment without additional software. Run the command in PowerShell (the older wmic tool is no longer installed by default on Windows Server 2025):
Status: OK
The drive is classified as healthy by the system. No action is currently required.
Status: Pred Fail
Warning: A failure is imminent. Back up your data immediately and request a drive replacement.
Detailed Analysis (Recommended)
For continuous monitoring and email alerts, CrystalDiskInfo is a proven free tool for Windows servers.
Software & Status
Use the portable version of CrystalDiskInfo. Blue indicates "Good", yellow means "Caution" (early wear), and red ("Bad") indicates a critical hardware defect.
Email Alerts
Configure your SMTP settings under Function > Alert Features. The tool will then automatically notify you via email of critical status changes.
CrystalDiskInfo evaluates the individual S.M.A.R.T. attributes and therefore detects wear earlier than the Windows Event Viewer.
